What a shocker

The news that tennis sensation Sania Mirza is to wed former Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik, has surprised not just fans, but also the couple’s close friends. Mirza and Malik, who are set to get engaged in Hyderabad on April 7, followed by nikah on April 15 and reception in Lahore on April 16, managed to keep their affair a closely guarded secret. Actress Rakshanda Khan, who was by Sania’s side all through her earlier engagement to ‘childhood friend’ Sohrab Mirza, expressed utter shock and told HT City, “I had no clue. Sania didn’t even speak to me about this.”

Javed Miandad, President of Pakistan Cricket Board, who is known to be close to Malik said, “I had no idea. Could you tell me when is the wedding?” Cricketer Wasim Akram, too, expressed shock and said, “I had no clue that they were seeing each other.”

Badminton champion Saina Nehwal said, “I got to know from TV. Her last engagement was a sad experience. I wish her good luck.”

Pakistani media has reported that the two have been dating for six months. That Sania split from Sohrab Mirza barely two months back, citing incompatibility, is making many wonder if it was because she had started seeing Malik.

Past love
Malik was said to be dating Bollywood starlet Sayali Bhagat in the past. In an interview then, Bhagat had said, “He makes special trips just for me and showers me with attention. I am in love, I guess, our religion is not an issue, I am concerned about the distance between us.” Delhi based designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil are doing the trousseau for both Sania and Shoaib, for the wedding.

Meanwhile, the net-o-sphere is abuzz with reactions from fans. “How can she marry a Pakistani cricketer? India main ladkon ki kami hain kya?” posted Ashutosh on Sania’s fan community on Orkut with 56,743 members. “I am no more a fan of this girl... leaving this community,” adds Sujan S.

“We are proud to have Sania as our bahu,” says Ammar from Lahore.

It’s big news in Karachi. I don’t think it’s really a match. Look at his background — a rural family, not very literate. Sania is a babe. If the marriage survives, it’ll be good, but I don’t see it happening.

‘Go Marry Sridevi’

MA Siddiqui, the father of Hyderabad girl Ayesha Siddiqui who Malik allegedly married in 2002 before denying it because ‘she had become fat’, reacted bitterly in an interview to a local daily, “He can marry anyone...Hema Malini or Sridevi. Shoaib married my daughter but refused to accept it. I know the mental agony my entire family had undergone and the time it took for us to recover.”

Sania applies for Pakistan visa

Sania Mirza applies for Pakistan visa after the announcement of her marriage with Shoaib Malik, the former cricket captain of Pakistan, tweeted Star News.

Last night news broke that tennis player, Sania Mirza is all set to marry Shoaib Malik, the former cricket captain of Pakistan. The news was later confirmed by Imran Mirza, Sania's father.

Shoaib tweets "Thanks for all your support. And the news of me marrying to Sania is true. Inshallah will get married in April."

According to reports, Shoaib’s mother met Sania’s parents in India and accepted her as future daughter-in-law. The Walima or reception is expected to be held in Lahore on April 16 or 17.

Sania and Shoaib fell in love some six-and-half months back and it could be the reason for the breaking up of Sania's engagement with childhood friend Sohrab Mirza.

“I desire to get married soon. You will soon get some good news but it depends on my family. I fully expect to get married this year,” Shoaib had said in a recent interaction with the media here. Asked if it would be an arranged marriage, he said, "No one can say what will happen, but it will take place with the concurrence of my family.”

Sania Mirza's mother was delighted by the decision and says, "Marriages are made in heaven."

The Hyderabadi connection
This is not the first time the cricketer is tying the knot. Incidentally, Shoaib was earlier accused of marrying another Hyderabad girl, Ayesha Siddiqui, in 2002 over phone even though the cricketer said he was merely engaged to her.

Ayesha's father had also threatened to sue Malik for jilting the girl and not giving her divorce.

Again, Shoaib wears his heart on his sleeve for another Hyderabadi girl. Sania and Shoaib fell in love some six-and-half months back and it could be the reason for the break up between Sania and childhood friend Sohrab Mirza.

Farisa Siddiqui, Ayesha Siddiqui' mother was shocked on hearing the news. "This is breaking news for me. I can't believe what TV channels are airing. I will speak to Sania's mother and get a confirmation about the marriage. I am shocked," Farisa told a news channel.

Future factfile
Imran Mirza said that his daughter would continue to play tennis after she had recovered from a wrist injury.

He added, "The couple will be based in Dubai, where Shoaib is a resident, and Sania will continue to play tennis once she recovers fully from the wrist injury that has marred her career in the recent past," Imran said.

While reports about the engagement started doing rounds since early evening, Sania’s father Imran Mirza, a former sports journalist, confirmed the news to a leading Indian channel, Aaj Tak, while speaking from Hyderabad Deccan later in the evening.

When news that tennis sensation Sania Mirza is all set to marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik broke on Monday, it took the nation by surprise. Though Sania’s much-publicised engagement to childhood friend Mohammed Sohrab Mirza was called off in March, her relationship with Malik was kept under the wraps.

As the media went abuzz with reports of Sania and Shoaib’s engagement, which were later denied by Sania’s family, Farisa Siddiqui, the mother of Ayesha Siddiqui, the Hyderabadi girl who the cricketer was allegedly married to in 2002 was shocked.

“This is breaking news for me. I can’t believe what TV channels are airing. I will speak to Sania’s mother and get a confirmation about the marriage. I am shocked,” said Farisa from her Banjara Hills residence.

When asked about Ayesha’s reaction to Shoaib tying the knot, Farisa said, “My daughter and husband are not at home and will return later today. There is too much happening for me to comprehend.”

The family had pressed the player to give a formal divorce in February 2008, after Shoaib claimed that there was no ‘nikah’ between Ayesha and him.

According to Ayesha’s mother, she attended Sania’s engagement last July and was invited by Sohrab’s family, “I’m not associated with the Mirzas (Sania’s family) in anyway.” Farisa was not just upset, but also angry about the Sania-Shoaib alliance. “I can’t believe this girl (Sania). She has seen what happened to my daughter, it was all over the news. Despite this she got involved with this man (Shoaib). It’s sad that she’s getting married to him; it’s strange,” she said, adding that she would have a word with Sohrab’s family to find out why the engagement with Sania was called off.

What went wrong with Ayesha…

Shoaib Malik allegedly got married to Ayesha Siddiqui through a telephone ‘nikah’ on June 3, 2002. But in a statement in Karachi on January 21, 2008 Shoaib claimed that no nikah took place. The cricketer said his marriage plans with the Hyderabadi girl ended because both families could not reach an understanding on certain issues. “Yes I had a long relationship with her and we planned to get married. But no nikah ever took place and in the end our families could not reach an understanding on various things,” Malik had said. Ayesha’s father M A Siddiqui had then said that the family would move the court if his daughter did not get divorce. Pakistani players were even feted to a grand reception by the Siddiqui family in Hyderabad when the team toured India in 2005.
